Spencer joined the SignalFire team in 2018 to scale and lead finance operations. Previous to SignalFire, he’s spent the majority of his career helping build out and systematize finance and compliance functions at other top-tier venture capital firms.
Spencer was previously at Social Capital, where he structured operations, back office management, investor relations, and reporting for three successful fundraises. As the Finance Manager of the Hedge Fund, Social Capital’s public markets vehicle, he designed and implemented operational structures compliant with the heightened scrutiny for Registered Investment Advisers, and managed routine operations of all investing and reporting functions, working closely with portfolio managers and investors. Prior to Social Capital, he was at Morgenthaler Ventures, where he helped modernize and systematize the back-office functions. Spencer assisted in launching two new funds and in unifying back office functions with a sister firm.
He started his career at the San Jose office of PricewaterhouseCoopers in the assurance practice, specializing in venture capital and life science companies. He advised clients on valuations during a period of heavily increased regulatory oversight and investor scrutiny into valuation practices for privately-held illiquid assets.
Spencer holds an M.S.c. in Behavioral Economics from the London School of Economics, and a B.A. in Business Management Economics from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Outside SignalFire, Spencer has served on the board of directors of Downtown Streets Team, a non-profit working to end homelessness through the dignity of work. Born and raised in the Bay Area, he currently resides in San Rafael with his partner, three dogs, a cat, twelve chickens, one lonely duck, and small-scale apiary. He has a passion for world travel, sustainability, and urban permaculture. He can often be found exploring dog friendly nature trails in the Bay Area.
